Creating CORE Economist in Action videos
The purpose of the Economist in Action series is to:
- highlight the key points in the unit, and
- introduce a new piece of research or way of looking at things that is relevant to the points in the units.
Videos should be less than five minutes long.
The exact number of words depends on the speed of delivery, but the maximum should be 700 words. It is possible to fit more words in, but the video should not be just a voiceover—it needs to take time to show an image and to let students reflect.
The video should not aim to cover everything. It is a complement to the units, not a substitute for them.
Part 1: The set up
This part should be:
- less than one minute long
- a maximum of 150 words.
It should cover these questions:
- What is the problem?
- What is the question?
- Why does it matter?
Part 2: Showing economics in action
This part should be:
- 2–3 minutes long
- a maximum of 450 words.
The two key words for this part are show and action; the section cannot be static.
It should cover what economists are doing to solve the problem or answer the question.
This section needs an image to tell the story. It can be a conceptual figure, a data figure, a photograph, or something real like a hockey stick.
Part 3: Take away
This part should be:
- less than one minute long
- a maximum of 150 words.
It should cover these questions:
- What should students take away from this work?
- Which questions are still left unanswered?
- What research is underway in this area?
